Overview

CiViL Groups is a character education program. We meet in small groups  – 4 to 8 students at a time – once a week. The goal is to talk about real problems that get in the way of making good choices. Groups are separated by gender, so students can talk about anything. No one will make you talk, but when you need to, we’re here.

Policies & Procedures

When We Meet

CiViL Groups meets once a week during the second half of each block.  CiViL Groups Students receive a pass to come to group each week as long as they keep up their class work and grades. You will always meet with the same group. That way you get to know those students, and you can get comfortable sharing with them. In order to keep you from missing the same class every week your group will rotate through the schedule. If your group met during first block this week, you will meet second block next week, third block the following week, and so on.  We will begin signing students up in August. CiViL Groups starts the week after Labor Day and ends the last week in April.

Confidentiality

CiViL Groups is like Vegas. What happens in CiViL Groups stays in CiViL Groups. That’s the only way you can trust your group enough to be real with them. Students and leaders promise to keep your business private. And you will keep theirs private too.

Acceptance

We want each group to be a safe place where you can talk about anything. So we will urge you and the other students in your group to avoid criticism, teasing, burning, sarcasm, advice-giving, and other non-accepting responses. Your CiViL Groups facilitator will do his or her best to accept you as you are and help you to look at your problems and choices in a way that is helpful and encouraging. We won’t shy away from the real things, but we won’t hammer you with guilt or shame either.

Participation

No one will force you to talk in group, but we are here so that you can. If you choose not to come regularly, we won’t be mad at you. However, since we have a limited number of spaces, we want to make sure everyone who signs up for a group actually comes.
